Almanac Urban Mill & Bakery is looking for a hands-on, detail-oriented Assistant Miller to join our team! This full-time role is perfect for someone who enjoys working with their hands, has an interest in local grain systems, and is excited to be part of a growing team committed to quality, sustainability, and good bread from the ground up.
As our Assistant Miller, you’ll play a central role in producing fresh-milled flour for our bakery, retail shop, and wholesale customers. You’ll operate our stone mill and oat roller, manage inventory, and help maintain a clean and efficient milling space. If you're mechanically minded, organized, and ready to get dusty in the name of great flour, we’d love to hear from you.
Mill flour daily to fulfill bakery, retail, and wholesale orders using our stone mill and oat roller.
Operate equipment safely and efficiently, including bag sewer, walkie forklift, and scales.
Bag and label flour with accuracy and care.
Maintain detailed milling, maintenance, and cleaning logs.
Perform basic equipment troubleshooting and regular cleaning tasks.
Communicate with bakers to ensure flour meets product needs and quality standards.
Track grain and flour inventory and update shared records (Google Sheets, inventory systems).
Assist with packing and fulfilling customer and wholesale orders.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of milling systems and workflows.
Uphold food safety standards and follow all PPE and safety protocols.
You’re organized, responsible, and good at managing your own time and tasks.
You have some experience in food production, kitchen work, or using tools (a plus, not required).
You’re comfortable with physical work: standing for long periods, lifting 20kg bags, and repetitive tasks.
You’re handy and mechanically curious; you don’t mind troubleshooting and figuring things out.
You’re open to wearing protective gear and working in a loud, dusty environment.
You’re excited to learn about flour and grain, and to contribute to a traceable, sustainable food system.
WHMIS certification (required or willing to obtain after hiring).
Bonus if you’ve worked with inventory systems like Google Sheets, QuickBooks, or Shopify.
Receive full hands-on training from our Head Miller, as no prior milling experience is required. You’ll learn to operate our unique equipment and master our processes step-by-step.
Be part of a small, values-driven team making an impact on local grain systems.
Get hands-on with flour and milling and learn a skill and knowledge that few people have.
As we grow, this role has the potential to evolve into expanded responsibilities or even Head Miller as we scale our milling operations.
2 weeks paid vacation, 5 paid sick days, and 30% staff discount.
Free fresh-milled flour for home use.
Health benefits in development for full-time team members.
Share in tips as part of the new shop team.
Work Environment and Expectations
Physical role requiring frequent heavy lifting (up to 20kg), repetitive motion, and long periods of standing.
Exposure to grain and flour dust; respirator mask and PPE required (provided).
Loud working environment due to milling equipment.
Independent work with responsibility for daily production goals and cleanliness.
Flexible hours with a typical shift from 8 AM to 4 PM; some weekend availability may be required.
Must be comfortable operating machinery and troubleshooting mechanical issues as they arise.
Attention to detail, responsibility, and safety awareness are essential to success in this role.
